Shutterstock has recently launched its first Generative 3D API, combining advanced technology with ethical content creation.

The tool, powered by an NVIDIA foundation model, is currently in its commercial beta phase. It utilizes AI to rapidly generate realistic 3D models while ensuring fair compensation for original creators.

The new Shutterstock 3D API, built on NVIDIA Edify's advanced generative AI architecture, is a cloud-based service allowing enterprise customers to generate lifelike 3D models using text or 2D images as input.

The initial generation appears as a 2D image, which, upon approval, can be transformed into a 3D model. The delivered 3D models are available in GLB, USDz, and OBJ formats as triangles and quad meshes, complete with physically based rendering (PBR) materials.

Shutterstock has also introduced a new feature based on the same NVIDIA model, which is currently in private beta with early access. It's a 360° HDRi generator API, capable of producing detailed natural environments for lighting 3D scenes.

This innovative tool enables studios and developers to accelerate their creative processes, allowing for the rapid generation of 3D models for various purposes, such as prototyping, creating a base for final characters, or populating 3D scenes within minutes.

At the upcoming SIGGRAPH 2024 conference, early adopter partners will showcase how they utilize this API. For example, HP uses it for 3D printing and prototyping, Trigger XR for XR environments, and WPP for virtual production in NVIDIA Omniverse. Shutterstock's in-house Studios will also demonstrate how they leverage the technology for immersive productions, illustrating its diverse applications across industries and projects.

What distinguishes this generative AI is its robust ethical framework. The model has been trained exclusively on Shutterstock's extensive library of ethically sourced content, comprising over half a million 3D models and 650 million images and image metadata.
